O2 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ASL HOLDINGS TO SPONSOR THE ENERGY EVENT - AUGUST 2009
Western Business Exhibitions is pleased to announce that O2, in partnership with ASL Holdings, is the new Official Sponsor for The Energy Event 2009. The Energy Event, which takes place on 9th and 10th September at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, is the UK’s only annual exhibition and conference to focus solely on energy procurement, management and efficiency, and water efficiency.
Speaking on behalf of ASL Holdings Ltd, provider of M2M solutions for the energy industry, Managing Director Bill Berry said: “This is our third year as an exhibitor at The Energy Event which is one of the best trade shows in this industry in my opinion. The wide range of exhibitors, the free seminar programme and the excellent venue mean that it attracts real decision makers from within the energy industry. The style of the venue also means that it has a ‘personal’ feel about it and provides great networking opportunities as a result. ASL Holdings has been working with O2 for a number of years now and is a key O2 M2M Centre of Excellence Partner. O2, in partnership with ASL Holdings, is proud to be the Official Sponsor and we are looking forward to discussing with visitors how, in partnership, we can meet their business needs.”
Eamonn Brennan, Event Director commented: “With communication at the heart of many of the opportunities and challenges facing the energy industry at the moment, I’m delighted that O2, in partnership with ASL Holdings, are sponsoring the event this year. I look forward to working with them and to developing a mutually rewarding relationship.”
The Energy Event takes place at The National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham on 9th and 10th of September 2009. The event is free to enter, with free parking although visitors are advised to register in advance for seminar places and entry tickets.

THE ENERGY EVENT GOES CARBON CLEAR FOR FIVE YEARS - MAY 2009
Carbon Clear will measure and offset the carbon footprint of The Energy Event. This involves gathering information about the gas and electricity consumption, visitor travel, how the waste is handled etc. Carbon Clear will then offset the footprint using high quality carbon offsets. In 2008, The Energy Event generated 115.42 tonnes of CO2.’
According to Cameron Wilson, at Carbon Clear, one of the major ambitions of this partnership is to help to reduce the total carbon footprint of the event. “The most significant contributor to the carbon footprint last year was visitor travel. We have online information which will help educate the visitor about how they can reduce their overall effect in 2009.” Alongside this online information, Carbon Clear will also be working with The Energy Event’s organisers, as part of their consultancy role, to help them implement initiatives which will reduce the total carbon emissions even further.
This partnership is evidence that the events industry is becoming increasingly ‘carbon aware’, with the timing being particularly apposite, as Carbon Clear is just about to launch an online carbon footprint calculator specifically tailored for the events industry. Using the online calculator event organisers can get a rough estimate of their carbon footprint.
With the recession affecting most sectors, one view is that environmental matters have had to take something of a back seat as the focus on core business intensifies. However, as Cameron Wilson emphasises, “Carbon emissions are generated by use of energy and resource consumption which are cost centres to your business. Simply by identifying and implementing ways of cutting carbon, businesses can be driving efficiencies and cost savings. Do it well, and your business will almost certainly retain and win new business. . Similarly, when carbon offsetting appears as a line on the profit and loss account it becomes a cost which needs to be driven down. With the Finance Director engaged, carbon reductions tend to follow.”
The Energy Event covers energy management, procurement and efficiency and through its range of conferences, as well as its exhibition, it addresses issues and technology which stretch from the shop floor to the bottom line. The Energy Insight conference is aimed at those looking to the future of energy policy, as well as for more immediate savings, while other seminars will be hosted by ESTA, CIBSE, Envirowise and the MEUC and contain a mixture of practical and legislative information.
“We were very happy to align our brand with The Energy Event” says Cameron Wilson from Carbon Clear. “The aims of the event are very close to our own in that we are both trying to help people improve their carbon performance while improving their business performance simultaneously.”
The Energy Event takes place at The National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham on 9th and 10th of September 2009. The event is free to enter, with free parking although visitors are advised to register in advance for seminar places and entry tickets.
UK MANUFACTURER SAVES £18,000 PER YEAR THROUGH THE ENERGY EVENT - MARCH 2009
UK manufacturing company Brown and Holmes (Tamworth) is set to save £18 000 per year following the installation of a range of technologies that were sourced at the 2008 Energy Event. The technologies in question were recommended as part of an energy conservation proposal supplied by Carbon Control, a solution provider in the energy conservation field, and covers heating, lighting, compressed air and voltage optimisation.
Carbon Control managing director, Andrew Fletcher, and his team are regular visitors to The Energy Event having attended for the past three years. With his company’s aim of permanently reducing energy use and CO2 emissions for its clients Andrew finds the event, which in 2009 will take place on 9th and 10th September, to be the perfect mix of the latest technology and service providers. “I have a plan of the companies that I want to see and can do so at the Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham without embarking on an orienteering exercise.”
A main focus of attention for Andrew in 2008, with the challenges that were facing Brown and Holmes very much in mind, was to find a company which could work alongside Carbon Control in understanding compressed air and was able to identify savings and propose solutions. Atlas Copco Compressors, a long-standing exhibitor at The Energy Event, was present again in 2008 and it was here that the two parties embarked upon initial discussions. Andrew Fletcher says, “We had been looking for a long time for a compressed air specialist to work with. The knowledge of the companies we had spoken to previously or their reliability had seriously under whelmed us but Atlas Copco was able to support us with everything we need in terms of technical expertise, air survey experience, infrastructure and superior products.”
Atlas Copco conducted a full compressed air survey at Brown and Holmes Tamworth site which included monitoring the compressed air consumption over a seven day period. Ian Ashcroft, of Atlas Copco’s Air Audit Team said, “We were then able to produce a report which, through empirical data, demonstrated the opportunity to reduce compressed air use on the site by 65% through replacing the current oversized compressors with a GA series Variable Speed Drive machine and other, smaller capacity units, by implementing time scheduling and by reducing the system operating pressure.”
Following the energy conservation proposal Brown and Holmes has invested £47,000 across a whole range of measures including replacement lighting throughout the factory; voltage optimisation and heating system control. This investment is being funded through an interest free loan secured for the manufacturer with the help of Carbon Control via the Carbon Trust.
Speaking about the project Kevin Ward, Director, Brown and Holmes commented, “Accessing such affordable credit is even more important in the current recession and the 30 month payback period on the equipment will provide us with the competitive edge we need to move forward. It is clear from our work with Carbon Control that The Energy Event is highly important for those companies looking to source a wide range of energy conservation products and services.”
The Energy Event takes place at The National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham on 9th and 10th of September 2009. The event is free to enter, with free parking although visitors are advised to register in advance for seminar places and entry tickets.
LATEST LEGISLATIVE INFORMATION TO BE EXPLORED AT THE ENERGY EVENT - FEB 2009
The Energy Services Directive, the Carbon Reduction Commitment and the ongoing nuclear power debate will be top of the agenda at The Energy Event this year. These important legislative reforms will be explored in depth, debated and interpreted at this year’s event which is taking place on 9-10th September 2009 at the National Motorcycle Museum, Solihull.
One of the main topics for debate will undoubtedly be The Energy Services Directive which impacts on both providers and users of energy. The Directive’s full name is the EC Directive on Energy End Use Efficiency and Energy Services and it covers all forms of energy, including electricity, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas and other fuels such as coal and heating oil, biomass and transport fuels (except aviation and bunker fuels).
The Directive applies to all energy users (except those involved with the EU carbon emissions trading scheme) and providers of energy efficiency measures, energy distributors, distribution system operators and retail energy sales companies. The main requirements of the Directive are: energy savings target of 9% by 2017; public sector to fulfill a lead role; EU Member States required to place obligations on energy suppliers and distributors to promote energy efficiency; requirements on metering and billing to allow consumers to make more informed decisions about their energy use. Also featuring high on the agenda at The Energy Event will be the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), a ‘cap and trade’ scheme that requires participants to purchase and then redeem certificates against their energy use. The CRC scheme, which begins in April 2010, will apply to larger energy end users such as supermarkets, hotel chains, banks and other multi-site businesses’, central government and large Local Authorities; affecting those that have half-hourly metered electricity consumption greater than 6,000 MWh per year. This roughly equates to an electricity bill above £500,000, although it would apply to emissions from direct energy use as well as electricity purchased.
Although revenue neutral to the Exchequer, the CRC will have cash flow implications and it has been estimated that an energy saving of 5% will be needed to cover the average cost of administration within an organisation. Central to the CRC implementation is a league table that will be used to reward those that perform well while penalising those that do not.
Alan Aldridge of ESTA (Energy Services and Technology Association) looked forward to this year’s event saying, “The timing could not be better as, come September, everyone will be beginning to think about their benchmark budgets for the CRC and so will be looking for information. The roll-out of advanced, half-hourly meters in accordance with the Energy Services Directive will also be well underway and I expect this to generate many queries from both providers and consumers alike. In order to provide assistance ESTA will be giving seminars, some of which look at practical implementation while others concentrate on wider policy issues.”
The Energy Event takes place at The National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham on 9th and 10th of September 2009. The event is free to enter, with free parking although, visitors are advised to register in advance for seminar places and entry tickets.
ENERGY ESTABLISHES ITSELF AS A BOARDROOM ISSUE - OCTOBER 2008
The Energy Event 2008, which was held on the 10th-11th September at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, has been heralded a resounding success with another significant increase in visitor numbers. Proving that energy issues are now top of the agenda for businesses today, the event achieved its best ever attendance meaning that visitor numbers have increased by over 85% in the last five years
In the current climate, the need to reduce costs has made energy, particularly energy saving and efficiency, increasingly important for businesses. This fact was demonstrated by the number of visitors with senior level job roles at The Energy Event: nearly 20% were directors, 32.5% were managers and 10% of the total number of visitors held the specific job title of energy manager.
Event director, Eamonn Brennan, says of the event's success:"The ever increasing visitor numbers at The Energy Event shows that more and more businesses are looking for advice on energy management and efficiency. This year's seminar programme again included sessions from top level professionals and this, coupled with the wide range of products and services on show from over 100 exhibitors means that The Energy Event is one of the few places that they can get this advice." For conference material and photos from The Energy Event 2008, please visit www.theenergyevent.co.uk.
Exhibitors at The Energy Event also noticed the increased visitor numbers and the senior level of many of the visitors as John Forman from Atlas Copco Compressors noted:"Once again this was a good show for us, with excellent quality visitors. The numbers were certainly up on last year, with more people coming to our stand than before." Robin Hale, director of the Major Energy Users'Council (MEUC) echoed this saying:"During both days of the event, our stand seemed to be under siege from potential new members. From our point of view the exhibition was highly successful, attracting the right mix of visitors and we will certainly be returning again next year." Indeed, another indicator of The Energy Event's success is the number of exhibitors who rebooked stands for 2009 before this year's event was even over.Dan Moat, sales and marketing director for Encore International commented:"We had a significant return on investment on just the first day of the event which overall was extremely successful for us. I had no hesitation in booking again for next year." The Energy Event 2009 takes place on the 9th and 10th of September 2009 at The National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham and promises to once again be a key diary date for anyone involved in energy procurement and management.
